Mark Lionel John – Making learning interesting – teach for change

Mark was always inclined towards creative teaching. Mr. Hart, Mark’s Physics teacher from school instilled a creative and fascinating method of learning for his students. He couldn’t start teaching right out of college because he didn’t have enough real-world experience. After working in big corporate firms such and Ernst & Young and Grant Thornton, Mark decided to pursue his passion of teaching. “I decided to do my M.Com, which was an important step for me to get the right lessons from the right people.”

With the right balance of the corporate world and an M.Com degree, Mark was ready to begin his career as a teacher – a creative teacher. He currently works at an organization called iStar Skill Development, which is a 4 year old company. The company’s philosophy is built on the principles of linking students’ goals to what they learn. Mark enjoys this methodology of teaching, because it involves the use of tools such as case studies, short films and engaging activities, which makes the learning experiences enjoyable for the students.

Mark also actively works with people across different areas such as marketing, finance, sales, chartered accountancy and other professionals who have been in their industry for considerable time. The classrooms are designed in ways that keeps students interested throughout each session of learning. Mark plays a vital role in designing of the classrooms and also assists in setting up a 30-hour training module for teachers with respect to classroom design.

Mark’s goal is to promote this training technique, which has brought out immense improvement in the lives of people. “I enjoy this model of teaching and we want to progress to different areas of education such as degree level courses, with major focus on the MBA students.” Teaching was Mark’s passion and he has loved every moment of his job. His advice to young passionate people is to walk on the paths of passion and not overthink too much, because overthinking could lead to negative thoughts and the flame could eventually die out.
