Johanna Pinto – She was created to create. Bangalore’s very own ‘Artist To Lookout For’.

Growing up, we all have interests and hobbies, but we tend to leave them behind in our childhood. Not Johanna Pinto, who has remained dedicated to her love for painting, a passion she has been drawn to since her early years. As she recalls, “My love for painting started when I was in the 2nd standard. I distinctly remember tearing out a sheet of an image of a woodpecker from a colouring book and re-drawing and painting it many times.”

With the support of her parents Johanna pursued her passion by getting a degree in textile design at NIFT, and then working as a designer for Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla in Mumbai.

So how did Art by Johanna come about? “Art by Johanna Pinto is all about original artwork in the fashion and art sphere. Soon after I graduated from NIFT I worked in Bombay for 2 years as a Textile designer. A lot of concepts and ideas were brewing in my mind and I couldn’t wait to work on them. While I was working my designs were being picked up, produced and sold in the market. I gained the confidence to step out independently. I wanted to create and design artwork true to my style,” she tells us.

Johanna works as a textile designer and painter. She creates customised artwork for her clients that are exclusive, and suited to their persona and style. She also designs high quality silk scarves that carry the prints of her paintings. Her creations are displayed on her Facebook page and in exhibitions held around the city. Commenting on her work, she says, “I am very curious about the interrelation between fashion and art and I am striving to create work that is a balance of both worlds.”

Her dedication to her work has led to her success and popularity. Every piece of art crafted by Johanna is a product of intense research, planning, trials and errors. Explaining the work behind her famed silk scarves, she says, “I spent over a year researching, sketching designs and producing it until I knew I was satisfied with the quality of the designs – if they are worthy of being taken seriously as a designer product. The idea behind the silk scarves is “Art you can wear.”

As an artist, it is often difficult to justify the worth of one’s creation as people value the work of art based on their like/dislike for it. Many a time budding artists have to sell their pieces at lesser value just to get started. Johanna though has a different take, “I believe if my work is good it will sell itself. That’s the philosophy I live on.”

A truly gifted artist with a unique imagination, Johanna finds inspiration in everything. “A random conversation, an article, a life experience, anything, and I’m always ready with a notebook and pen to jot it down and develop a concept out of it. Generally I love things that are beautiful or elusive. I feel the purpose of art is to transcend or move you.

Shedding light on her future plans, Johanna says, “In my own way I would like to leave an indelible mark wherever I travel. At the moment I’m working on a theme which blends Symbolism and contemporary art. I’m exploring a variety of ways to do this. I am working towards showcasing these pieces in December and cannot wait to see how they turn out.” Neither can we!

It’s one thing to have talent, quite another to put in the time to hone it, and bring it to the forefront. Not many have the patience and determination to be steadfast in their pursuit of their dream. Most give up, deterred by the effort and sacrifices required. But not Johanna, “It’s a great rush doing work you are passionate about, once you feel that anything else becomes impossible to settle for. I know that this is what I was born to do.”

One of a kind, just like her art, Johanna Pinto did what it takes to get to where she is today. After all, dreams work only if you do.
