Artsy, wacky, and a whole lot of fun is Sugama Gopalkrishna. Sugama’s untamed style in visual arts compelled her to open shop for various household items, from plates to coasters, to cushion covers, you ask for it and she will have it. Paper Rocket, her brand is a unique cornucopia of wild and vivacious visual art for lifestyle products.

She focuses on Graphic Designs, Branding and Textile Designs with Paper Rocket. Sugama has a chock-full of academical knowledge and experience with her, from B.A in Mass-Communication, to majoring in Graphic Design from Srishti School of Art and Technology, to finishing a foundational course in visual arts at RMIT University in Melbourne, to interning with Arvind Chenji for photography. This young woman gets bold and spreads her wings to absorb whatever holds her interest and builds on them to perfect her art.

I realized I shouldn’t take a downfall very seriously and also learnt how to handle tough situations better.”

Her photography skills and her extensive knowledge in textile designing, advertising, graphic designing has given her a strong backbone. She says, “I like being versatile and experimental. Paper rocket was a result of my knowledge in various creative processes.”

But to start-up just because you’re boiling over with creative ideas couldn’t have been easy, for which she earnestly says, “I have had quite a few ups and downs having to work on my own. Entrepreneurship needs a lot of drive, passion, investment and confidence in your work. There have been moments where I have felt like it was pointless – what I was doing, as it was getting very tough to put my work out there.” But despite the low she felt, she was persistent about getting her ideas out in the world; which made her realise that one can only grow from one’s mistakes. Sugama says, “I realized I shouldn’t take a downfall very seriously and also learnt how to handle tough situations better.”

It is important to be aware of the competition, but it should never bog anyone down.”

To have the world as your oyster is the plan for Sugama, who follows it through and through. She says she rather not concentrate on the competitions around her, because that will only take her mind of what’s really important. “I strongly believe that if you do whatever it is you are doing with passion, effort and belief, it will work. It is important to be aware of the competition, but it should never bog anyone down.”, she clarifies. For Sugama inspiration rises from everything around her and mostly by being aware of other’s work around her. This helps her see others as a form of inspiration rather than a form of competition.

I often found that my lack of clarity in certain stages of my work led to great misunderstandings and losses. Also, don’t expect anything when you start, it is a struggle and a race till the finish line and you should be prepared for that.”

There are few who would genuinely guide those who are taking the rough, long and hard road to self-dependence and with all that she has learned from her falls and rises, she says, “Always be clear about how your work is going to pan out. I often found that my lack of clarity in certain stages of my work led to great misunderstandings and losses. Also, don’t expect anything when you start, it is a struggle and a race till the finish line and you should be prepared for that.”

Today Sugama’s personal and professional growth is setting the bar for creative lifestyle products quite high. For she often mixes her versatile art knowledge to bring out a masterful design, she says that she loves making visuals by mixing various techniques and processes.

I often found that my lack of clarity in certain stages of my work led to great misunderstandings and losses. Also, don’t expect anything when you start, it is a struggle and a race till the finish line and you should be prepared for that.”

Her business is growing but not in the usual, typical online advertisements, though she has a website and Instagram account named after her brand, she says that she is not pro social media. She goes old school and says, “I find that face-to-face interactions help me more in selling my work, rather than social media.”

Her work is different, odd, and gushes with quirky creativity. Such brouhaha is unstoppable; such passion is unbelievable unless you can witness Sugama’s work for yourself, you will not understand why and how she is steadily carving a strong brand for herself. She is the kind who would probably say, “Where there’s will there is a way.” Her work proves that she has a hold on magic, perhaps that would be the reason why her work and art hooks itself into one’s mind. As for the creator herself she says, “I am looking to diversify my line of products into small interior pieces. It’s still in the process of making, but I’m quite excited to work on something new for Paper Rocket Studio.” Sugama is a name to look out for she is bold and brave enough to take the world by storm.

Do you have that quirky creativity and odd heart too? Have you taken any steps to let that colourful soul of yours out? Sugama has been taking those steps towards that impossible dream and making a reality of it every day. The important question to ask yourself is if you want to be bold like Sugama Gopalkrishna or be a rat like Peter Pettigrew –  the choice is yours.
