Saahas Patil, an incredibly talented musician with a voice that gives you goosebumps, while reaching into your soul. For Saahas, music has been his passion since his teenage years, “I knew that it was all I wanted to do since I was in high school when I heard ‘Scenes From A Memory’ by Dream Theater.”
I knew that it was all I wanted to do since I was in high school when I heard ‘Scenes From A Memory’ by Dream Theater.”
There was a defining moment when Saahas realised he had a real gift for singing. A chance audition and eventual selection for a school singing competition led to the realisation that he was a good singer. He joined his school choir which was the beginning of his musical education. Expressing how deeply he was touched by music he says, “I loved being in it and hearing the sound of harmony. I hung around kids that played instruments and sang as much as I could which eventually turned into writing songs and joining bands in high school. I loved that stage of discovery. Playing the guitar was born out of the desire to make and create the same feeling I got when I heard music that moved me.”
The journey hasn’t been easy, professionally and personally. Empty venues, disagreements with fellow bands members, missed gigs (for reasons beyond his control), Saahas has seen it all. But he believes that these experiences make him who he is, “Super frustrating, but these are moments that will define your success as a person and musician.” He embraces the obstacles that come his way as opportunities to grow. Commenting on the difficulties he faces after moving to L.A., he says, “Even basics like paying rent and making a living is something that I took for granted in India. Working two jobs, studying music and playing gigs has been a challenge, but it makes you grow so much as a person.”
I think trying to be real is my biggest inspiration. I’m inspired by things that happen to me, people around me, music that I hear or poetry that I read.”
In a chaotic and distracting world, where does Saahas find his inspiration? “I think trying to be real is my biggest inspiration. I’m inspired by things that happen to me, people around me, music that I hear or poetry that I read. Once you have your idea, you have to really think about the whole process from start to finish, but also never lose sight of the vision you started with.”
Saahas is busy carving a space for himself in Los Angeles. And he couldn’t be more thrilled!
“I’m writing and playing gigs here, and I love it. It’s a place where you work hard and know what you want, you will succeed.” He hopes to collaborate with, and write songs for other artists, while creating original music for himself.
If you know without a doubt that it’s what you want, and more importantly what you’re already actively doing, then take a leap of faith and don’t look back.”
Saahas didn’t let go of his dream, and has been working towards it, no matter the odds. Not surprising that he advises others to do the same, “If you know without a doubt that it’s what you want, and more importantly what you’re already actively doing, then take a leap of faith and don’t look back.”
Saahas Patil didn’t just dream, he put in the work to get to where he is. Life threw all sorts of challenges his way; but instead of getting bogged down, he chose to grow. All this because he loves what he does truly, madly, deeply.
