Raghu Dixit is India’s foremost live Indie act. His talent has taken him places, with performances in India and abroad, including playing for the Queen of England and the entire Royal Family. Not many can boast of that honour. Raghu’s music is rooted in Indian culture and traditions, fused with a modern contemporary sound. Lively, infectious and upbeat, his performances are an absolute treat!
Speaking about how his journey as a musician started, he says, “I got into music quite late when you compare it with many others, but once I discovered music, there was no looking back!” The Raghu Dixit Project is my own unimaginative name for something really beautiful. A collective of musicians who come and add their own flavour to my music and vision!” When you’re meant for something, it always finds you. The way Raghu found his calling in music, even if it took a while.

As a musician Raghu’s goal is to perform what he knows and enjoys, to make his listeners happy. “Folk music is all I know to perform. I don’t think of music as genres – I have influences from all genres in my music. I only want to make happy music that brings a smile on peoples’ faces and that’s all I care about, not anything technical.”
No story is complete without a mention of the struggle and hardships that the protagonist has had to overcome. For Raghu though, it’s an everyday occurrence. “It’s not easy being an independent musician in a country so dominated by commercial / mainstream music. The classic story of how Vishal Dadlani discovered me singing at a pub in Mumbai and then along with Shekhar started a new label to launch me is a common tale in my career!” Furthermore, apart from competition from other musicians, Raghu believes anything that captures the attention of the audience, ranging from movies to sport is a threat. Explaining his viewpoint, he says, “I don’t think of competition between musicians, but more importantly there is great competition today for the mind space of a listener.”

Constantly raising the bar of his performances, where does Raghu find the inspiration for new music? He says, “Too many to name! I am always surrounded by music, so I keep notes of any interesting idea or melody that I stumble upon during my humming and doodling.”
With endless possibilities ahead, Raghu is game for anything that allows him to put his talents to use. “I am working on a bunch of movie projects and new music that will be released regularly. I am open to pretty much anything music related.”

Parting with advice for others wanting to get into the music industry, he says, “This is not a simple glamorous journey. It’s going to take a lot of hard work, loneliness, and single minded determination to get you there. Be prepared for that!”
Do what you love with sincerity and passion, and don’t give up; everything else will fall into place. Raghu Dixit perfectly embodies that thought. After all, you alone are the master of your destiny.
