While most people her age are making weekend plans, Unita Chandan is planning the next collection of her brand Ommel. Born to lead the way in fashion, Unita has always known it was her calling. “I always wanted to be in fashion. Along with my Bachelors in Business Management, I did my diploma in Fashion Designing. Also, working with my Dad for 6 years in the fashion business has helped with running my own fashion brand.” Grooming herself from day one, such has been her commitment to her dream.
I always wanted to be in fashion. Along with my Bachelors in Business Management, I did my diploma in Fashion Designing. Also, working with my Dad for 6 years in the fashion business has helped with running my own fashion brand.”
Explaining the idea behind Ommel, Unita says, “My friend and partner, Amrita, and I have always shared a love for fashion which we wanted to channel into a brand of our own. We would see these fabulous clothes trending internationally on social media that couldn’t be found here; as there are very few brands that make such styles. And even then they are fairly common, you end up bumping into girls wearing the same outfit quite often. Surely, other girls felt the same way. Sensing this gap, we decided to launch Ommel.”
Juggling two full time careers and dealing with the challenges of running a fashion brand in an intensely competitive market would have made a lesser person quit ages ago. But Unita is made of tougher stuff. “I have been the Creative Director since 2010 for Hard Currency Jeans which is a denim brand founded by my father. That is still my full time job. Ommel is what I do ‘after hours’. My biggest constraint is time. Juggling two jobs isn’t easy. But I love them both!” Ommel tries to supersede competition with quality fashion. “We try to win with our fabrics, prints and styles. Also, we create limited pieces per style, (sometimes just one!) which gives us an edge.”
A true fashion enthusiast, Unita is deeply inspired by Amancio Ortega, founder and owner of Inditex group that owns Zara and other hugely popular brands. “In terms of business, I look up to Amancio Ortega. It’s amazing how he has created so many successful brands, and just refuses to lose the plot!”

Humble and down to earth, Unita credits her family with the success of Ommel. “Working with my father gave me the experience and courage needed to take this step. He is my hero, mentor and guardian angel. My mother has been my pillar of support. Without my parents, there would be no Ommel.”
Sharing her plans for the future, she says, “I would like to first give Ommel 100% of my time, and then decide where I want to take it. However, short term plans are to touch Delhi and Pune.”
Beautifully put, Unita’s advice for other dreamers is simple yet hard-hitting, “Find a way to make it happen. Nothing is impossible. What you seek, is seeking you.”
Trust in the plans of the Universe, but not without putting in the work. Unita Chandan has put her heart and soul into achieving her dream, and now she is being rewarded for it.
