It was by mere chance that Steve got into stand-up comedy. He actually wanted to be a writer. He explains how it happened, “Graduating as the dot com bubble burst made that (becoming a writer) difficult. I was looking for something to pass time, and I stumbled into stand-up comedy.” And encouraged by a great first show, he embarked on this journey.

Steve’s fame as a comedian paved the way for his career as a sports writer. He says, “Once I started getting notoriety as a comedian, I used it to get opportunities as a sports writer. I love stand-up – it is my favourite thing. That I can use it to hang out in dugouts and locker rooms makes it that much cooler.”

Nothing worthwhile comes easy. Steve has had his fair share of bad gigs, unpleasant incidents and disappointments. Some experiences have even made him want to quit. But an eventful journey is what makes the prize at the end of it even more cherishable.

It takes great fortitude and passion to succeed in such a competitive field. As Steve says, “The vast majority of people who ever take the stage as a comic will never even make enough at it to pay taxes, let alone pay rent. To do this, you need to really love it.”

Steve believes comedy should be about truth, with a touch of compassion. He aims to give people a different perspective, get them to think, while talking about subjects that are important to him. Discussing his views on comedy, and ideas for his acts, he says, “I try to find a premise that everyone accepts as truth and then prove it wrong. To me, the best bits are the ones that make people say ‘I never thought of it that way before’. I make sure my jokes are compassionate. I haven’t always, but I now try to do my best to make sure the victim of my joke is not a victim in real life.”

Steve’s long-term vision is to be a bigger and better version of what he is already into. “I want to be in a position where I can do two things – think of something creative and make it happen, and see a talented comic and get them noticed.”

Don’t ever make excuses for why you’re not successful. You’re the only one standing in your way, ever.”

Not one to mince words, he gives some tough advice to those wanting to get into his field, “Don’t ever make excuses for why you’re not successful. You’re the only one standing in your way, ever.”
