In a world where being a Taylor Swift is the way to go, Charlotte Campbell, a British singer and musician is creating a brand by simply being herself – a musical delight to hear. The pressure to have a record label to one’s name might make some musicians hesitant to put themselves out there and express their music. But, not this Londoner. She funded her own album with the help of Kickstarter, and her followers who helped pay for it through pre-orders.
Belonging to a family that is musically inclined, Charlotte was always encouraged with respect to music. She started out when she was a mere toddler of three years, giving her first performance in public. Then at the age of 11 she worked in the West End for a stage production of a musical. Charlotte loved singing in musicals but the lack of professional dance skills had her take up the guitar as a teenager, so that she could sing without having to rely on dancing. And since then this bright musical soul has become a YouTube sensation. Today her songs are widely viewed and heard. You can spot her on the streets of London, singing, purely because she wants to spread the joy of music. Apart from street performances, Charlotte has also had shows in renowned venues in London like Hard Rock Café, Bedroom Bar, The Bedford among others. She has even performed in Austria at Burg Kaprun.
It’s a challenge when the perception of success is Taylor Swift; in reality living comfortably as a musician is successful in itself.”
Charlotte says, “The main thing is really just doing something against the grain from everyone else; your friends and your family and everyone you meet. You have to explain yourself constantly and it can be very lonely.” It’s the one emotional hold-ups she experiences at times. She had one particularly hard and lonely experience on a cold, windy day when she found she had made only £2.50 in an hour while busking on the street. Down-in-the-dirt moment such as these are the ones that Charlotte feels are important to have; so that one know that days like these will come again. But, they also make the better days all the more rewarding.
Making a debut as a professional singer can be hard. But, what’s harder is realising and accepting that one need not need a big record label to have a successful music career. Charlotte believes that having a professional singing career doesn’t have to be about management or booking agents or validation from the music industry or millions of pounds. She says, “Being a professional singer is making a living from singing, paying your rent and bills and still having something left over for a glass of gin and tonic at the end of the day. It’s a challenge when the perception of success is Taylor Swift; in reality living comfortably as a musician is successful in itself.”
When you have made up your mind to do the thing that makes you happy, and can make the stars shine bright even on dark days, you know that you are on the right path. Because of her father’s reservations about her choice of career, there was a time when Charlotte felt that being a teacher would be a safer option. But, once she started making a living from music, safety was nothing but a loose word. She hasn’t looked back, and lives every day with a promise to be happy.

When life is on the rocks you push, and push until you have moved boulders, and created a path for yourself. Charlotte hopes to achieve that with respect to her career. She dreams of doing a tour in U.K, Europe and the U.S.
