Gabrielle Gardiner, better known as Gabz to millions of her fans all over the world, is a 17-year-old British singer/rapper who took the world by the storm with her performance in Britain’s Got Talent (Season 7), 2013. Her original composition titled “The One” was so good that it impressed even judge Simon Cowell, who everyone knows is difficult to please. His reaction to the piece, “I absolutely loved that. I really did. I think that’s a cute little song, great chorus, you know, produced properly that song… you may have something there.” And with that and four unanimous ‘Yeses’, Gabz flew into the semi-finals, then finals, to finally be placed seventh in the competition.
I have always loved music and used to sing in the car with my mum and brother!”
Gabz has been likened to a young Lily Allen, but many feel that she has the melody of John Legend and the funk of Bruno Mars, with her rapping and harmonious singing creating a rare combination. Despite such a barrage of compliments and fame, this young star is like any other teenager. Singing was part of her usual time before Britain’s Got Talent changed her life. “I have always loved music and used to sing in the car with my mum and brother! I had only performed in school and at church.” When asked how she acquired such spectacular skills, she laughs and jovially answers, “I used to have violin and piano lessons but I always just wrote music myself. I think it’s all about practice and I play music everyday!”
I think Jessie J is an incredible singer and songwriter and I love what she represents.”
Gabz enjoys the life of a regular teenager with the usual drama and normal fun, and hasn’t faced any difficulties with respect to her music career yet. Content with the way things are, she says, “I’m still quite young and I’m studying at school, so, I haven’t put any pressure on my music career yet. So far I’m just enjoying it and I think it’s going really well.” ‘Going well’ is an understatement. Today, this young songwriter has multiple singles, and an album to her name. A quick rise to fame hasn’t caused Gabz to have any airs. Education is her priority, and she works hard to balance school and her music career. Also, given her rapidly growing celebrity status, her parents keep a strict eye on her, although they are very supportive of her music career. Talking about her parents, she says, “They definitely didn’t want me to be in the music business as it’s such a tough industry. But, they’ve still supported me as they know it’s the only thing I want to do.”
I’m still quite young and I’m studying at school, so, I haven’t put any pressure on my music career yet. So far I’m just enjoying it and I think it’s going really well.”
Managing college applications, alongside building her music career, Gabz is hopeful about the future. She says, “I’m hopefully going to study music at University next year but will also be writing more music and developing my style. I would love to do an album and collaborate with some other artists in the future!”
When you watch her YouTube Vevo music videos, you can already see a big entertainer and an even bigger personality in the making. Her unique look with braided locks and a cap gives Gabz a distinctive image and style. It’s no wonder that Gabz is inspired by another unique and out-of-the-box singer, Jessie J. Gabz says, “I think Jessie J is an incredible singer and songwriter and I love what she represents.”
While this teen sensation is set to reach great heights as a singer, she is not taking her time with her parents, or her teen years for granted. She is enjoying life while keeping her music going by simply having fun and working hard at it. You’re never too young to be Bold and inspire others, as Gabrielle Gardiner demonstrates; by displaying maturity, strength and humility way beyond her years.
