The Improv’s big star Sumukhi Suresh is an absolute delight both onstage and off. Every cell oozing humour and wit, she is one of India’s top female comedians.

A funny one by nature, Sumukhi’s foray into comedy began purely by chance. “I did some theatre when I was in college. In 2013 I was looking to get back to it. I came across a post on Facebook then saying ‘The Improv’ is looking for actors. I assumed it was a play and went to try out. I fared well and later realized it’s an improvised comedy show. I was picked and did my first show on 22nd July that year. And comedy began for me!”

There have been times when I have been directly or indirectly told that I am not cut out for this profession. Since comedy is a piece of oneself, these moments hurt, but whoever said vengeance is sweet, knew her shit didn’t she!”

Working hard to succeed as a comedian is no easy task. In Sumukhi’s case, the pursuit of excellence is what makes her stand out. She says, “I never dreamt of becoming a comedian. For me, my comedy journey has not been about chasing a dream, but to be as good as possible at what I do.  There have been times when I have been directly or indirectly told that I am not cut out for this profession. Since comedy is a piece of oneself, these moments hurt, but whoever said vengeance is sweet, knew her shit didn’t she!” Proving the naysayers wrong, here she is, breaking the glass ceiling one witty punch-line at a time.

Acting to me is my honest rendition of the part I play. The moment I am dishonest, you cringe and that’s the end!”

With theatre as her background and comedy her forte, Sumukhi has an insightful take on acting. She says, “Acting to me is my honest rendition of the part I play. The moment I am dishonest, you cringe and that’s the end!”

Not wanting to wait around for opportunities, Sumukhi is keen on creating content and roles for herself to take her career forward. “Since this is the only career plan I have, I think waiting for things to happen might not be a smart idea.”

A living example of her own advice, Sumukhi says, “Nothing can replace hard work and determination. Also don’t be in a hurry to prove a point; there is a time and place for everything.”

Good things come to those who do. Ask Sumukhi Suresh. She isn’t one to sit around and wait for her dreams to fall into her lap. She is blazing a Bold path for herself.
