The weapon of choice to take down her critics: Hula Hoops. Lisa Lottie, the British performing artist is internationally renowned for her fabulous displays of contortion using hula hoops. Passion has a new form and it balances multiple hoops on one leg.
I love a good challenge and I consider my job well done if I made someone stop in the middle of the tracks of their day to experience something different and special.”
This spectacular form of entertainment is rare, and one can easily develop an addiction for these swirling displays. Just like Lisa, who fell hopelessly in love with hula hooping when she participated in a hula hooping swirling display as an extra in a Fatboy Slim music video.
Being an entertainer is hard, especially if it’s an out-of-the-box act, so Lisa would often take her hoops to the streets and perform. She says, “I think when you busk on the streets with your art you come to experience the roughest of the rough. I’ve really seen it all in that way. But, that motivates me more. I love a good challenge and I consider my job well done if I made someone stop in the middle of the tracks of their day to experience something different and special.”
This was just the beginning of the difficult times ahead. Lisa joined the National Centre of Circus Arts in London where she majored in Hula Hoops. Believing the Director of the school who felt Lisa was incompetent for any other circus discipline, this show-stopper pushed herself hard to pursue what she wasn’t comfortable with. Opening up about it, she says, “I was pushed hard into a direction of making dance based circus work, and it took me the entire length of the course to admit to myself that I absolutely hated the way I was expected to work.” But it was only a matter of time before she rebelled. She further adds, “And at the end, after I finished school and just focused on making art for the sake of entertainment, things started to roll into place.”
Currently Lisa is working on new hula hoop acts that she’ll be performing in 2017. With the spirit to do the last thing everyone expects of her, Lisa has taken on a challenge. “I’m also doing aerial hoop for a short contract in February which is super exciting because I will finally get to prove my old school director wrong and perform another discipline!”

Lisa’s magnificent display with lit hoops and aerobatics looks perfect. But, beneath a serene and calm façade she keeps the intense stress she feels while performing carefully hidden. She says, “Having flown for a day and then doing three minutes of technical hula hoop skills for some kind of million-dollar-gala in the middle of some ballroom in some city somewhere is pretty stressful. But there I am, throwing hula hoops around the room having to catch them at the precise point in time when I planned it. While at the same time I have to look cool as a cucumber.”
When these nerve wrecking moments start taking a toll, Lisa reminds herself that she does it because of the smile it brings to people’s faces. She says, “I want people to forget about the rest of their life in those three minutes.” Her three minutes of glory have led her to many opportunities, internationally and in her home land. Lisa has also given a TedX talk on inspirations and following your gut.
Lisa herself is inspired by people who constantly push through regardless of how hard the world goes against them. She says, “When a thousand people think you cannot do it, and you do it anyway because you know in your heart that it’s the right thing, that is what inspires me. When all the odds are against you and you beat them.” While Lisa looks up to people who make bold changes in their lives, music is what drives her to move and flow with her hoops.
Lisa Lottie is a wild one, the genuinely artful one, the unexpected star. She proved her caliber by taking the reins of her life in her own hands. She made a bold professional decision and is resolutely happy with it. She is a performer and an entertainer, an adventurer who is worth her grain. Watch out straight-laced naysayers, for life hardly shines for those who are unadventurous.
