Have you ever laughed so hard that you peed a little in your pants? Don’t be embarrassed, that is the highest compliment you can pay a comedian! Sahil Shah is one such comedian, with the wits to make you laugh till you cry or pee in your pants. It’s a fact!
A jovial, and upstanding desi, Sahil cracks jokes that are shudh non-veg, garnished with our typically Indian day-to-day issues relating to our mothers/parents or even crossing our Indian roads. The funny man that he is, Sahil has been blessed with the comic gene from his father, who also loves cracking jokes, and inspired Sahil to take the stage. Sahil says, “As a kid I used to see him be funny at family gatherings and see him hosting things and always wanted to be in his place. Now I’m on stage and he looks at me off stage and smiles.”
Sorabh Pant and Kunal Rao used to tour together until Sorabh decided to rope Sapan and me for a show. That night while we were having wild intercourse with each other we realized we should be a group because our sexual prowess will destroy, and that’s how East India Comedy was formed.”
For all those who get the nerves when doing their first stand-up act, do as Sahil did. Sharing his memorable experience, he says, “My friends came with me for my first show and they laughed at everything that I said. The trick is to carry a big group of friends along so they laugh and spread them about so other people laugh when they laugh.” That night was a good night for him, he got the confidence he needed and that’s when it all started. Apart from his individual acts, he is also part of the hit East India Comedy gang (the comedians who cannot crack bad jokes). When asked about his ‘involvement’ with comedians like Sorabh Pant and Kunal Rao, Sahil showcasing his naughty sense of humour says, “Sorabh Pant and Kunal Rao used to tour together until Sorabh decided to rope Sapan and me for a show. That night while we were having wild intercourse with each other we realized we should be a group because our sexual prowess will destroy, and that’s how East India Comedy was formed.”

Sahil’s comedic talent is exceptional also because he is very observant, and uses that skill to his advantage during an act. Nearly all of his jokes happen on the spot, he sees something and the joke just pops into his head. Sahil’s passionate affair with comedy started blooming once he started performing regularly (after his first stint on stage). And as he got better and started making some money out of it, that’s when he realised, “Woo. This could be my job.” And a fulfilling job it is; one which even his parents are very happy with (“As long as I am not killing someone else then this is the best thing ever,” Sahil quips). With yet another wise-crack on his pursuit of happiness Sahil says that there was no way he was not going to do this, and adds that he is very happy being a verbal prostitute (getting paid to talk).
With a horde of excellent comedians in the young stand-up industry, there is a lot of competition and this time the funny-man gets dead-serious when talking about the hard times. “There are moments where you will fail. I still fail. You can’t be successful all the time. People will be ahead of you. People who have just become comedians will one day be bigger superstars than you. There is nothing you can do about it. Just keep working and be the best that you can be.”
As for any future plans Sahil has planned that he is not going to go easy on his us, the audience, and we think his agenda is to make some poor chap literally pee a lot in the pants, because he has decided to take a special solo tour in 2017. Apart from that, Sahil is also working on his book which will be a compilation of his Tweets, and is developing a web series.
Bold as brass; and funny to his last nerve, Sahil Shah has set out on a journey to spread a lot of smiles. Cheers to that!
