Wine, dine, romping stories from the good ol’ days and belly shaking laughs that you share with your mates from school make memories to be cherished.
St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School, one of the top schools in Karnataka, has a fully functioning Alumni association that is 99 years old. The ‘Old Boys’ Association’ (OBA) as it’s called, has members across several batches who meet up to relive their tales of glory and bunking sessions. To make it a grand event this year, the school formed an elective committee to organise one of the biggest Alumni meets and football tournaments in years.
In an urge to motivate the younger batches to participate in the meets, the committee decided to make a grand celebration of it. Various sponsors were brought in for this year’s Football and Alumni Meet. With Himalayan as the refreshment partner, Your Design as the merchandise partner, and Fever 104 FM as their broadcasting partner, St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School pulled out all the stops to celebrate this big event with all the grandeur and pomp possible.
Old boys from all parts of the country and the world, as far as Australia flew in to participate. The excitement for the matches grew rapidly, and unexpectedly over 23 younger batches came in to participate. “It was a massive turn out!” says Vivek George, one of the Alumni committee members.
The football event ran on the weekend of 26th and 27th November, with over 300 people attending it. For the matches Bangalore Football Club was their advertising partner. The success of the event could be witnessed through the cheery faces of all those who attended it. The senior boys faces glowed with a young playfulness as they tried to recreate their days of football splendour.
In addition to this event, St. Joseph’s is also set for their Christmas dinner on the 10th of December, where the winners will get their prizes. The matches were organised for pre and post 2000 Batches separately.
Here are some of the shining stars of the tournament:
Batch of 1991 are the winners
Batch of 1999 are the runners-up
Rohit Mascarenhas (1997) – Highest number of goals
Fouzan (1991) – Best goalkeeper
Batch of 2007 are the winners

St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School hosts a series of events almost every month, be it a dinner party or a football tournament. The main reason for such meets is to strengthen the bonds of age old friendships, and networking. Apart from hosting events, the committee recently started the Batch Coordinator Group in an effort to maintain strong ties with the Alumni. Vivek George, standing member of the Alumni committee explains how these groups help in networking and strengthening connections with the ex-students, “Each batch has a group in which the coordinators send in the news. So the system and networking is really strong. And this way the bonds really grow and get stronger.” George also says that such groups come in handy to help. “Tomorrow if someone needs a job, we shoot out a message in the group and the response is almost immediate.”
St. Joseph’s has many groups of OBAs, recently having started Joseph’s OBA Chapter USA, for ex-students residing there to connect. They also have chapters in Coorg, Mangalore, and Kerala. A strong and historic alumni association like the OBA flourishes because of the constant effort by its members and the school.
