Salt Cathedral’s Spicy Musical Journey

in Entertainment by

From ethereal music to breezy tropical rhythms, Salt Cathedral‘s uniqueness is in their versatility. Salt Cathedral comprises of the power-duo Juli and Nico, who originally hail from the spirited land of Bogota, Columbia but are now located in New York. The band has collaborated with music giants like Matisyahu, Assassin, and Lee Scratch Perry. Juli talks about their combined experience of building Salt Cathedral.

Salt Cathedral makes music that has melodious beats combined with instrument improvisation, making their songs a must have in one’s playlist. This band is the real deal. They don’t shy away from sharing how they have worked their way up from scratch, “We learned songwriting and production through experience and are still honing our craft everyday and trying to learn from the vast amount of music that is out there.”

Nico and I are naturally introverted and shy; and to put your music out you have to put a face to it, be more outgoing. You have to almost be like a salesman for your music; and that can sometimes be a challenge when you are also the one creating the art.”

Salt Cathedral’s most popular chart-hitting songs include ‘Unraveling’ ft. Matisyahu, ‘No Ordinary Man’, ‘Holy Soul’, and ‘Tease’. But, success like this doesn’t come easy. Grit and constantly pushing against a seemingly unbudging door is what it takes. Juli expresses how difficult it gets for them to produce and showcase their music, saying, “Nico and I are naturally introverted and shy; and to put your music out you have to put a face to it, be more outgoing. You have to almost be like a salesman for your music; and that can sometimes be a challenge when you are also the one creating the art.” Creating music requires dedication and one has to suffer rejection while keeping their head above water. This duo has had to sacrifice the notion of economical stability and certainty for the future at times, in order to pursue music full time.

Rejection comes their way more often than one might guess. Despite having over 700 thousand views for their songs, and having people approach them for their work, there have been hurdles at every step. Juli says, “For the music video of ‘No Ordinary Man’ it took us two months to find a media outlet that was willing to premier the video.” She adds. “It was frustrating especially knowing that a lot of these things just happen through contacts, which we didn’t have.” Growth is slow but steady, Salt Cathedral is proof of it.

Never stop. The only one who loses the race for sure is the one who quits.”

Regardless of Salt Cathedral’s down-in-the-dirt moments, the motivation to improve and grow is what makes them true artists. They are immensely inspired by such artists. As Juli puts it, “Great artists and people who have been creative to the point where they can reinvent themselves and are in constant search of new ways to make art, to express and communicate themselves.”

After collaborating with some great musicians that Juli and Nico admire, and learning their way around the music industry with three albums, Salt Cathedral is set to release a new record in 2017. Juli says, “We will continue making music. We want to elevate the visual arts part of Salt Cathedral and are currently working on a couple of music videos that represent our sound and personalities.” Salt Cathedral is progressively growing and want to take their music beyond physical and cultural barriers to Asia, where they already have a growing fan base.

Graceful even under pressure, Juli knows the pushes, tugs and crawls that one must do to keep the dream alive. She advices, “Never stop. The only one who loses the race for sure is the one who quits.”

For musicians who relate to Salt Cathedral’s experience, Juli says “Have a 360 vision. You must be aware of everything, not just the music. You need to be aware of your media presence, your visual aesthetic, your cover artwork, videos, business handling, recordings, production sound, live show, stage presence and the list goes on.”

Salt Cathedral’s music is classy, artistic and just plain lovely. Keep your playlist updated with their songs. But more importantly, get inspired by them to never give up.
