An RJ, musician, fitness enthusiast, Ted Talk speaker and more, Malavika Varadan is a celebrated RJ who created a huge fan following in Bangalore hosting a show on Radio City. And now, she is just as popular as co-host of the show Breakfast No. 1 on City 1016 in UAE.

While Malavika wears many hats, she is most well known for that dazzling voice as an RJ. Talking about how it all started, she says, “Radio presenting happened by chance. I used to do voice-overs for Radio City. Rohit Barker was quitting and that left a much coveted spot on air empty. I did an audition, got a call back and was offered the show. As simple as that.” Not surprising, considering how talented Malavika is!

Radio presenting happened by chance. I used to do voice-overs for Radio City. Rohit Barker was quitting and that left a much coveted spot on air empty. I did an audition, got a call back and was offered the show. As simple as that.”

As a singer, speaker, and theatre teacher, Malavika says, “I have always loved audiences. The first time I was on stage I was 3. School was full of drama lessons and that changed my life. And I haven’t fallen out of love with the stage lights yet.”

While Malavika considers her life more a series of opportunities than struggles, the one time that really got her down was when she was turned down by the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad. But even that turned out to be a good thing. She elaborates, “This was just before Dubai called. I was gutted. I had wanted it more than anything else. In retrospect, I am so glad. If they had accepted me I would not be here, doing this, and I’m not sure I would be this happy.”

There is no prize at the end of a dissatisfying day. There is no grand accomplishment in being unhappy. No one will thank you for your sacrifices except yourself. Doing what you love is the best thing you can do for those around you.”

Always encouraged and supported by her parents, Malavika is deeply inspired by them. “My father was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago and he’s had the best life since! He is entirely present in the moment and the happiest person I know. I call him my Dalai Lama. My mother hula hoops, swims, does yoga, and has dedicated her life to the care of another person. No career or money or ‘achievement’ means more to me than that.”

This powerhouse of versatile talents does so many things, it’s hard to keep track! Sharing her plans, she says, “We have a TV show in the pipeline, a massive health and fitness campaign in the works and fantastic plans for the show. My dream would be an Oprah Winfrey career or a yoga school in the mountains.” We are certain she will make both happen successfully!
