Darshit Nayak had one simple dream at the age of 18: to be a singer. And today after 10 years of relentlessly working towards that dream he has arrived. He launched ‘Bedroom Concert’ on 15th August 2016, a day chosen to signify the beginning of his independent music career. ‘Bedroom Concert’ might seem like an odd name to describe the series of original songs written, composed, and sung by him. But, for Darshit it holds special meaning because his bedroom has been his place of learning, production studio, and stage. He learnt everything from scratch about producing music and videos in his humble bedroom; by watching YouTube videos and reading articles online. With no formal training, the internet has been his source of education and his bedroom his recording studio and performing space.
Darshit has been touted as one of the top YouTube singing sensations by multiple blogs. Further proof of his talent: he won the T-series singing contest held last year and got the opportunity to sing with renowned singer and music director Ankit Tiwari.
It was the lowest point [final year of engineering] because I had to convince my family that I could do it at a time when even I was doubtful about my skills and surviving the stiff competition. But I couldn’t give up. I can never give up.”
What was the push that drove Darshit towards music? He says, “I seriously considered singing when I was in 12th standard, after watching Abhijeet Sawant become Indian Idol.” Since then Darshit has worked to improve his singing and hone his songwriting skills, learning the trade every way he can. Commenting on the journey, he says, “Observing the pros and comparing my work with them has really helped me get better. And few years of training in light classical vocals has indirectly helped me in executing my ideas in a better and more organized way.”
Getting turned down multiple times was disappointing, but that just made Darshit work harder. Nonetheless a particularly difficult time was during his final year of engineering. He says, “It was the lowest point because I had to convince my family that I could do it at a time when even I was doubtful about my skills and surviving the stiff competition. But I couldn’t give up. I can never give up.”
Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later, the man who wins is the man who thinks he can.”
In terms of music Darshit loves Arijit Singh’s singing, and greatly admires Ed Sheeran’s songwriting. But when it comes to the kind of life he wants to make for himself, he looks up to two completely different personalities: “George Carlin the comedian, for the longevity of his career, his impact on mankind, and his constant evolution as an artist is inspirational. MS Dhoni, for the way he takes both failure and success in his stride, maintaining equanimity is something I wish to achieve in my life.”
With the concept of ‘Bedroom Concert’ Darshit wants to spread the message that even with limited resources you can create and spread your original music without depending on others. He says, “I would love to see ‘Bedroom Concert’ becoming a trend in the future. There are already many musicians doing the same, but I want to make a major impact, and I’m trying my level best to push forward in that direction using my Youtube channel.”
Speaking from his own experience Darshit urges aspiring musicians to acquire the right skills to make their music, to not give in to the negativity or wait for perfection before putting their music out, and finally to not give up. As he quotes his favouring saying, “Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later, the man who wins is the man who thinks he can.”
Darshit Nayak embodies the adage “If there is a will, there is a way.” Criticism, failure, financial limitations – nothing could stop him from pursuing his dream. That’s the mark of a truly Bold person.
