Kautuk Srivastava is one of the members of SnG comedy, a group of actors, comedians, and writers who do stand-up, sketch, and improv. Smart, witty and most definitely funny, Kautuk got into comedy after the realisation that being a comic novelist doesn’t pay much, and being a scriptwriter means watching your words being butchered by actors. Thus, Kautuk took the brave decision of turning to stand-up, the final push given by Robin Williams. In his own words, “Watching Robin Williams live on Broadway was a mighty push towards getting on stage. Never before had I seen the majesty of what a man can achieve with just a microphone and an overactive imagination.”

Kautuk’s first experience on stage was a disaster. He jokes about it saying, “I have tried my hardest to forget those old jokes but they come back to me in searing PTSD flashbacks.” Mark of a true comedian: turning an unpleasant experience into a humourous one. And this ability is reflected in his views on comedy, “I think it’s a tool that makes the plodding, boring, truth seem exciting.  A fairly complex and useful tool to help you get through all the turmoil that the world constantly generates.”

From performing to writing comedy, Kautuk elaborates on that move, “Screenwriting is something I naturally gravitated towards. I met Varun and Neville (fellow members of SnG Comedy) while working on a TV show they were starring in. We wrapped up the show and the next thing I knew, I was part of SnG.”

Scarcity of gigs, disinterested audiences, intense competition, these are issues that come with the territory, that every single comedian has had to deal with, almost like a rite of passage. So did Kautuk. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. As Kautuk says, “There were countless nights in my first year of comedy when the silences were louder than the laughs. Thankfully, people have been kinder off late.”

Kautuk SrivastavaFor the truly brilliant, inspiration is always closeby, ready to strike at any moment. “I get a lot of my ideas while I’m goofing off, daydreaming or plain old procrastinating on some other work. They usually come to me as odd observations or niggling frustrations. Apart from that, books serve as a major source of inspiration.”

Future endeavours include a novel in the pipeline. Additionally, more stand-up, abroad and in India is on Kautuk’s wishlist. He says, “There are many directions I want to explore but ultimately, regardless of which medium I choose, I want to tell better stories.”

A dream shouldn’t remain an unfulfilled desire. Kautuk Srivastava made his come true. Take a chance, you’ve got one life, let there be no room for regret.
