Being part of a legacy can sometimes be accompanied by the intense pressure to out-do the previous generations. And Naadia Mirza comes from a long line of entrepreneurs. But she isn’t just out-doing her predecessors, she is thriving. Her company ‘Dotted i’ that she co-founded is the brilliant outcome of an idea that she conceptualised while she was in debt! Dotted i is an event planning, management, and gifting company that has led to Naadia planning and managing over 300 theme parties, including formal foreign embassy dinners.
Naadia has had a head for business since she was six. However, despite coming from a long line of entrepreneurs and being an enterprising student, Naadia’s journey as a business woman hasn’t been easy. She explains, “There were days when no one would believe in my ideas or concepts. Then there were times when I was scratching at the bottom of my purse and had no funds to pay salaries! I have even been humiliated by clients. It only gets easier if you push through and be the bigger person.”
The climb upwards is never easy, but Nadia has proved herself by managing several high profile parties and dinners. She has affirmed that converting one’s hobby to a career is can be quite lucrative when done right. Backed by a Master’s Degree in Creative Businesses from Manchester Business School, Naadia says, “I never lost focus and burnt the midnight oil as long as I had to, because I knew that success was the only way out.”
I never lost focus and burnt the midnight oil as long as I had to, because I knew that success was the only way out.”
Over her ragged and rough journey, the visionary says that she has come to be inspired by two very dynamic people: Richard Branson (founder of Virgin Group) for his empire, and her father for his zest for life and motto of never giving up no matter what.
Like father like daughter. Her flourishing business and professional achievements have given Naadia the boldness to push the boundaries further. And there is no stopping this spirited business woman. Naadia tells us about her future plans, “The dream now is to create three independent companies, all connected in the field of creation, decor, and love and gifting.”
Put your ego aside, it helps no-one. Build a strong team. Hire right, fire people who don’t share your dream, ‘cause your team needs to feel the same passion.”
So invested is she in the growth of Dotted i and the future of her ideas that she says, “Naadia got lost by being defined only by Dotted i.” Speaking from her own experience of building a company from ground up, Naadia advises those venturing out to build their own start-ups, “Put your ego aside, it helps no-one. Build a strong team. Hire right, fire people who don’t share your dream, ‘cause your team needs to feel the same passion.” Fruits of hard labour are the sweetest, and hence, Naadia also tells beginners to help themselves to the fruits, saying, “Treat yourself to each achievement (my first achievement – I treated myself to a Eurotrip, 2’nd milestone – the Breitling watch and the list goes on). And also remember that materialistic wants are always in correlation to growth!”
Standing tall with her head held high, Naadia Mirza is the business woman who doesn’t hesitate to make a risky move and strike when the iron is hot. She is boldness personified.
