The BBC Film Maker And Expeditionist Who Scales Volcanoes And Swims With Sharks

in Entrepreneur/Sports by

Mission: Adventure. Location: Nature. Purpose: Freedom. Fearless and loving life, is the definition of Belinda Kirk. She has worked as a diver, is an expedition leader, and a BBC film maker (making adventure and wildlife films). Belinda has been organising treks and trips across the length and breadth of the UK, and as far afield as the South Pole; from short overnight adventures to long expeditions, since the past 20 years.

Once you’ve got a taste or a re-introduction to adventure and nature, you just want more, it’s the most natural thing in the world.”

Fearless, why? Travelling around Africa at the age of 18 is not what makes Belinda fearless. But almost getting kidnapped in Nairobi, and nearly being hit by a cruise ship while rowing in the UK, most certainly does. Usually, such incidents would make one rethink their lifestyle, but Belinda says, “It never crossed my mind that I should go home.”

Getting lost and being snowballed into one adventure after the other is how Belinda recalls spending her teen years and twenties. And she would often forgot to keep in touch with her parents. Belinda shares one incident when her adventurous life landed her before the British Foreign Office, “Once I forgot to get in touch for about 6 weeks as I was remote in Borneo and didn’t have easy access to a phone. By the time I called home, they had the British Foreign Office looking for me. It took a few years for them to get used to the fact that I was going to do this, no matter what.”

Immersing herself in nature and all its glory, Belinda feels that it is her personal mission to help people go on more adventures. She says she has seen the wilderness literally change people again and again. Further adding, “Initially it was to inspire others to go on at least one expedition or ‘big adventure’ in their life, but now it’s increasingly about helping others do more local, easily accessible adventures as often as possible. After all, once you’ve got a taste or a re-introduction to adventure and nature, you just want more, it’s the most natural thing in the world.”

We as a community at Explorers Connect are running Britain’s national day of adventure to inspire everyone to get outdoors on 1st July, and to raise money for a charity that helps disadvantaged kids do the same.”

The adventurer who made BBC documentaries also lived her dream of working with David Attenborough. This ambition of hers as a young girl is what led her into the dimension of travel and adventure. While Belinda lived and spent her twenties and thirties seeking the next thrilling experience, it was post her mid-thirties when she started on helping others seek adventure instead. And, it was over eight years ago when Belinda founded a free hub for people to find, and help each other have adventures: Explorers Connect ( www.explorersconnect.com ).

The latest development that has her wiggling her toes with excitement is the ‘Wild Night Out’ camp. She says, “We as a community at Explorers Connect are running Britain’s national day of adventure to inspire everyone to get outdoors on 1st July, and to raise money for a charity that helps disadvantaged kids do the same.” She further adds saying, “It’s easy to get involved, whether you camp in your garden with the kids or climb a mountain with some mates.” A fiery expenditionist with a compassionate heart, Belinda is indeed one of the most interesting and inspiring contemporary adventurers.

Belinda’s most ambitious adventure yet is starting a movement through Explorers Connect and Wild Night Out, which she calls an “adventure revolution”. Expressing the need for it she says, “I love taking groups of people into the wilderness through Explorers Connect. Upcoming adventures include swimming with seals and sharks off the coast of Britain, sleeping in a snowhole and teaching winter skills in Scotland, climbing a volcano in Europe, kayaking across Scotland and dog sledding through Norway. I’ll be doing all these trips with beginners and I love opening these worlds to them.” She paints a lovely picture with her words of the adventures ahead.

When drastic changes that make us unhappy take over our world; happiness, love, and adventure are the means to keep us moving forward. All the more reason to follow the path the bold and brilliant Belinda Kirk sets, the one of brave and life-altering adventures.
