Music is in her genes quite literally, being the daughter of Loy Mendonsa, who is part of the celebrated musical trio: Shankar, Ehsaan, and Loy. But, Alyssa Mendonsa is her own person, standing tall, purely on her own merit. As she says, “My father has worked extremely hard to be where he is; and I am very proud of him for all he has given me musically, and as a parent. To be surrounded by his music is a beautiful feeling. I am not trying to be anything or anyone other than myself.”
“There was a point where I decided to walk away from music because of how emotionally drained I felt.”
A talented singer from her early years, Alyssa’s first public singing performance took place when she was in 1st grade, for a singing competition. No surprise that this award-winning artist won the 1st prize. Nonetheless, Alyssa pursues music for the joy it brings her, and no other ulterior motive. She says, “I never dreamt of becoming a musician/singer. Singing was something I did for fun and till this day that’s why I do it. I am grateful however for all that has happened in my life because of it. Music chose me to be a part of it and not the other way around, is how I see it.” A true artist, who exists for the sake of her art.
Perhaps, it’s easier to handle the challenges that life throws at you, when you’re in it for the passion. However, that doesn’t make the hardships sting any less. The singer of the song “Uff Teri Adaa” from the movie Karthik Calling Karthink says, “I have had emotional lows and the only reason is because of the business side of music. People can say nasty things sometimes, and it makes me sad because they have forgotten the joy of their work, and basic courtesy while speaking.” She was even on the verge of giving up music, but music wasn’t ready to give up on her. “There was a point where I decided to walk away from music because of how emotionally drained I felt. Just then the universe presented me with the biggest opportunity of my life. Music chose me again so I decided to stay and it’s been amazing.”
Sharing her views on the evolution of music Alyssa says, “Any kind of evolution is always good; so has been the case with music, it has given us exposure to different sound, formats, and genre.”
While Alyssa is currently working on a project, details of which can’t be disclosed yet, she hopes to be a part of international collaborations in the near future.
People can say nasty things sometimes, and it makes me sad because they have forgotten the joy of their work, and basic courtesy while speaking.”
Alyssa’s ties with music run deep. Given how passionate she is about singing, she advises, “Whatever you are chasing, chase it because your heart chases it. Know your own definition of success and not the one the world tells you. If you are happy, you know you’re on the right track.”
Follow your dreams because they bring you joy, the rest will fall into place. As Alyssa Mendonsa proves, what is meant for you, will find its way to you.
