Surabhi Dewra is a saviour and an angel in disguise to millions of students across India. Her company CareerGuide is one of the leading ventures in the space of career counselling. It won the ‘Best Career Guidance Platform’ award in 2012, just a year after being founded. All your questions regarding further education in the IIMs, IITs, IAS etc. are answered, and guidance is provided by career experts.

I had not thought about entrepreneurship when I was in college or while working, but my passion led me towards it, and now I feel content to be contributing my efforts towards improving the education system in the country.”

Speaking of her interest in the field of education, Surabhi says, “I have always been passionate towards education and I used to teach students through NGOs and also organised a career event in my college. Over time, I realised that a major problem in the country is that students have no reliable information about different career fields. They mostly select their career based on limited information that they get from their friends, teachers, and family. This was a huge gap, and I decided to work on it. Thus, I started CareerGuide to help millions of students select the right career field.” And while entrepreneurship was not her goal, she says, I had not thought about entrepreneurship when I was in college or while working, but my passion led me towards it, and now I feel content to be contributing my efforts towards improving the education system in the country.”

Belonging to a traditional Marwadi family, the decision to start something of her own was a bold one. Surabhi’s family were apprehensive at first, but are completely on board now, having seen her succeed and grow. Personal challenges aside, no entrepreneurial journey is complete without those customary obstacles that need to be overcome. Surabhi too faced hardships that lead to self-doubt. However, she tackled them bravely, to emerge mightier and more confident. “Many times I felt it to be too hard on me. In the beginning, it was difficult to make people understand the importance of career counselling. There were several other challenges like lack of funds, resources and time. But slowly, things became stable and I feel like I came out stronger from all those difficult times.”

Wanting to pass on the knowledge gained from her experience as a female entrepreneur, she says, “When I started my journey as an entrepreneur, very few female entrepreneurs were around, and people were not used to seeing a female leader. However, things are changing now and many young girls are taking to entrepreneurship. As a next step, I would like to mentor these young girls and help them pursue entrepreneurship with confidence.”

The long and hard route to success is inevitable, hence Surabhi advises, “Don’t rush, give time to your entrepreneurial efforts. One should not rush towards results; entrepreneurs should first understand what they want to give and what is actually required by their customers. They need to spend time thinking and understanding what the potential challenges are and how to overcome them. Also, they should spare some time for themselves so that they can remain creative. All in all, one can’t build success in a few months; every successful venture requires time and effort.”

A passion, hobby or an interest can become a lifelong career that brings you immense joy and fulfilment, just like it has for Surabhi Dewra. Don’t ignore those interests tugging at you, giving in to them might lead to the most wondrous things!
