Growing Out Of His Father’s Shadow To Becoming A Giant In His Own Terms

in Entrepreneur/Social by

The social entrepreneur, Ruman Baig, who, despite having a father in the popular realms of politics, remained true to his nature and simply served people in need because he wanted a change. Being exposed to social activity early on in life, the need to serve people was embedded in Ruman Baig. It was a family tradition for the socialist to serve as an attendee for a patient in the Bowring Hospital for a month. He connected and looked after the patient, and even consulted doctors to do the patients’ general check up. It was a family value that he held close to his heart, and he says that taking care of patients with major health issues is humbling and should be done without making a show of it. However, since he comes from a political background, it is well noted by the public. He says, “I might not be politically driven or politically associated right now, but, most of my social activism becomes political because of my political leverage.”

As I was growing up I started getting involved in public life. I started realizing that people from our generation are not very socially driven.”

Going against the tide

To serve and aid as an activist ran hot in Ruman’s veins, he says, “As I was growing up I started getting involved in public life. I started realizing that people from our generation are not very socially driven.” With the current generation being more driven by a corporate lifestyle, and unmoved by societal shortcomings, Ruman paused and took on societal problems himself. “People lack the awareness of what is happening and that is what starts the blame game. I feel you don’t need to be a politician or be in a social movement to make a difference. You just need to be more aware and socially active alongside your regular work.” Stressing on how we can make a difference, Ruman says, “There must be at least 1 hour in a week dedicated to your social commitment. Be involved with a social organization or group that makes a difference. Some efforts will make a huge impact to make the society better.”

Breaking the pattern

The activist, however, faced a mountain of prejudice that he had to overcome. Being a minister’s son often made him a target of discrimination in school as well. “No matter how playful, I always focused on my academics. But some teachers would always pick on me just to prove to the others that they could punish a minister’s son,” he says. The discrimination only fuelled his need prove himself even more. He therefore moved out of his father’s shadow and created his own identity, his own field of work, in his own special way. Whether it’s political, societal or entrepreneurial, Ruman has his own stand, values, and wants to create his own brand.”

With regards to healthcare, people want a multispecialty hospital, and since the government’s standards don’t meet up to society’s expectations, we did what we have to help society.”

Reaping the benefits

With all the work Ruman has put in, he was bound to reap some sweet benefits as well. He has recently joined hands with a corporate healthcare entity to start a multispecialty hospital on Broadway which belongs to the Shivajinagar constituency, in Bangalore. He says, “With regards to healthcare, people want a multispecialty hospital, and since the government’s standards don’t meet up to society’s expectations, we did what we have to help society.”

Exploring different avenues

While Ruman may be an activist, he feels more comfortable being renowned as a businessman. However, he does say that someday he would like to see himself in the public forum as a professional activist or maybe as a future contender for the legislative, or any space in Karnataka. He says, “I would love to represent the people and the youth to make a difference.” Ruman Baig shows us that it may be difficult to move out of a large shadow of a parent, or break away from prejudice; however, it is not an impossible feat. He is a man of bold ideas, who believes all is possible if only a person puts their heart and mind into making it happen.
