Music was always the path to take for Aditya Ashok. Fascinated with music since childhood, he always wanted to be in a band since he was eight years old. And, unlike many, reality didn’t push him towards mainstream careers, but instead, the passion and desire for music grew larger to the extent that nothing else was even an option for the musician to consider. After exploring music and playing in several bands, Aditya wanted to start a project where he had full creative control over the sound, visual aesthetic, etc. He then went by the stage name OX7GEN, to achieve his creative freedom, which proved to be an amazing journey for the passionate musician. This was also the musician’s first outlet to making electronic music that he’d been listening to for six years.

Embrace technology, use it to your advantage, and make music with honesty and creativity. That’s the only thing a musician needs to succeed.”

Burning the past for a better future

The boom in electronic music in the country is going to be highly detrimental to the musical landscape of the future, Aditya says. A lot of the well-established musicians have achieved their place in the industry because of the time and the effort they’ve put into learning a skill set like playing the guitar, drums, or any other instrument for that matter. With the advent of all this new technology, it’s become effortless to make music. Aditya, therefore, believes that the spirit of being a musician is getting diluted along with the music itself. He, however, believes that there’s nothing to be gained by dwelling on the past and says, “Embrace technology, use it to your advantage, and make music with honesty and creativity. That’s the only thing a musician needs to succeed.”

It has made it possible for me to record my ideas with instruments that I don’t necessarily know how to play, and thus be able to create whole musical pieces without having to work with anyone else.”

Flipping the script

Using the technological advancements in music to his advantage, the artist achieved creative independence by being able to create music with drums, keys, bass, and even use electronic effects. Technology has made it possible for Aditya to create music with various instruments even though he only knows to play the drums. He says with euphoria, “It has made it possible for me to record my ideas with instruments that I don’t necessarily know how to play, and thus be able to create whole musical pieces without having to work with anyone else.”

“Eventually in life, I hope to have a decent sized studio to work out of and also be involved with managing and/or programming a live music venue.”

Aditya AshokA successful schedule

Aditya Ashok is now looking forward to a big tour in Europe later this month with his band ‘Skyharbor’. They also have a new album coming out later this year, two OX7GEN EPs later this year, and a bunch of collaborative projects. Having such an eventful schedule, the musician says it’s hard for him to think beyond a year, at the moment. However, the passionate artist is crystal clear about what he wants to do later in life. He says, “Eventually in life, I hope to have a decent sized studio to work out of and also be involved with managing and/or programming a live music venue.” Hard work and perseverance is what has got Aditya Ashok to where he is today, and he would like to share his experiences in music to budding musicians. He believes that spending time on developing your skill is what will take you to the top. Whether you’re an instrumentalist, a songwriter, a music producer, or a DJ, the same rule applies, he says.
