How Selina Juul Reduced Denmark’s Food Wastage By 25%

in Social by

After moving from a turbulent Moscow to a safe and affluent Denmark at 13, Selina Juul had hoped for a cleaner, fairer, and a more sustainable world for the human race to live in. Since then, she has been featured in the Who’s Who of Denmark, 2015, awarded the Dane of the year, 2014, and was the winner of Nordic Council nature and environment prize in 2013, amongst other respected accolades under her belt. Selina is the founder of ‘Stop Wasting Food’, an organization with the vision to diminish the immense amount of food we throw away on a daily basis, which is a staggering 30% of everything produced. Because of this campaign that was founded by Selina, Denmark has reduced their food wastage by 25% in the last five years (estimated the Danish Agriculture & Food Council).

The real turning point was three months later when we were contacted by REMA 1000, the biggest discount chain in Denmark. They had read about my movement and they wanted to tangibly reduce the wastage of food.”

Instant recognition

While working in a supermarket in her teenage years, Selina had to throw away the unsold bread every evening. Enraged after she realized that the food could have gone to a homeless person rather than it going to waste, the passionate activist began a Facebook group called ‘Stop Wasting Food’. Two weeks later, this page received grand attention and Selina was all over the national media. The public was finally joyful that someone was moving towards reducing the wastage of food. But three months later was when Selina got her big break. She says, “The real turning point was three months later when we were contacted by REMA 1000, the biggest discount chain in Denmark. They had read about my movement and they wanted to tangibly reduce the wastage of food.” This too was all over the press and had got the government’s attention as well. Subsequently, the government contacted her and Selina received the opportunity to speak at the Danish Parliament, the European Parliament, and the United Nations FAO congress. She won 26 awards and nominations, and that was how the journey of the movement ‘Stop wasting food’ began.

“Our government is very much focused on the circular economy, the European Union has just published a circular economy package and have made a resolution on reducing food wastage.”

A boon for the government

Selina is now looking at making this an International movement and currently blogs on food wastage in the Huffington Post USA. She gets a lot of requests from many other countries but the activist says it’s not easy as Denmark is a small country, unlike many others that she’s been getting requests from. Her empowering activities have contributed greatly to the government of various countries. Selina says, “Our government is very much focused on the circular economy, the European Union has just published a circular economy package and have made a resolution on reducing food wastage.” Well Daka ReFood is a waste management company that is doing a lot with biogas and has joined hands with Stop Wasting Food. It’s fair to say that Selina Juul has marked her beneficial footprint on the face of Earth and has inspired many more to do the same as well. We hope that her story empowers many and has paved the way to make the world a better place to live in.
