‘Necessity is the mother of inventions’, a common phrase, but only those who have truly experienced a need; a necessity or perhaps suffered for it can build something that has an exponential growth. In this case, Dr. Renee Dua, a practicing doctor in nephrology (kidney related issues), internal medicine and hypertension, had a shocking and agonizing experience taking her infant son to the Emergency Room. She waited eight hours to see a doctor, only to be sent home in ten minutes, not feeling that it had helped much at all. It was then that Dr. Renee decided to form Heal, an on-demand healthcare service.
Starting a tech company after being a kidney specialist in private practice for years forced me to use a skill set I never knew I had!”
Healing the broken health-care system
Dr. Renee realised then that she was one among the many who experienced the same dissatisfaction from doctors on a daily basis. To counter this long standing issue, Heal was a perfect solution. “With Heal, we want to eliminate those long wait times and make the entire experience of seeing a doctor a more personal, affordable, and a convenient one.” Realising the broken health-care in America, this ex-Chief of Medicine, and other world-class physicians have taken on to provide quality medical care. She states, “Health-care is a right, not a privilege.”
Where the trust fits in
Heal is known for its on-demand house calls, therefore trust Dr. Renee says is a crucial element in her enterprise. She explains, “Creating trust is paramount since we address personal aspects of patient’s lives: health, home, and family.” Using their app or website, she says one can order for a doctor to one’s home or office, 12 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Creating trust is paramount since we address personal aspects of patient’s lives: health, home, and family.”
As an entrepreneur Dr. Renee has moved out of her comfort zone of her usual profession. The doctor say, “Starting a tech company after being a kidney specialist in private practice for years forced me to use a skill set I never knew I had!” Today the doctor says using her tech ideas in a product design has become as exciting as treating a patient.
The doctor, mother, and entrepreneur
Being a doctor, a mother of young boys as well as an entrepreneur, Dr. Renee does say gets challenging but she finds her inspiration being a happy mother. “My children are the reason I put one foot in front of the other.”, she says. Dr. Renee feels proud of her company’s growth and the happy response the patients have when they see doctors from Heal. The boost received from all the positive responses, she says, drives them forward to keep working through the nay-sayers and bureaucrats. The result: Heal is planning a nationwide expansion later this year.
Pushing through all the adversities, Dr. Renee Dua and her team in Heal prove that there are many in the healthcare system who take their jobs to heart and work very hard every day to better the lives of patients.
