We live in a society where the LGBT community is still not accepted completely and wholeheartedly. The older generation especially, has a hard time wrapping their heads around gays, bisexuals, etc. The mother of Harish Iyer, Padma Vishwanath Iyer is unlike most people from her generation. She has lovingly accepted her son’s sexuality and his decision to campaign for LGBT rights. Naturally, Padma has faced a lot of backlash from society and other parents. There are some parents who are very opposed to homosexuality, she says. She goes on to say, “They refuse to reason. Some have hung up on me when they failed to convince me that once a homosexual person gets married, everything would be fine.”
“They refuse to reason. Some have hung up on me when they failed to convince me that once a homosexual person gets married everything would be fine.”
Science holds the truth
After her son came out of the closet about his sexuality, Padma has been advising parents who also have bisexual children by telling them that homosexuality is a natural phenomenon. She says, “Children are born gay, lesbian or bi-sexual. It is not the environment or circumstances that govern their sexuality.” It wasn’t easy for Padma herself to accept her son’s sexuality. She initially was oblivious to the fact that a male can be attracted to another male. Research helped the bold mother understand that it was possible and being gay or bisexual is not a disease. And, what’s not a disease cannot be cured!
I think it should be legal for anyone who is an adult to get into a consensual sexual or emotional relationship with another adult. What adults do in their private space should be no one’s business.”
The 377 law doesn’t make sense to the supportive mother either. She says, “I think it should be legal for anyone who is an adult to get into a consensual sexual or emotional relationship with another adult. What adults do in their private space should be no one’s business.” Padma has even extended her support towards her son by posting a matrimonial advertisement for her son. Like every mother in India, she wants her child to settle down with a responsible person. We salute this mother for her progressive views on the LGBT community and for inspiring and educating other people as well. We thank Padma for her bold statements and hope her views will cascade onto other people.
