in Entrepreneur by

Graduating from Purdue University, USA to be a computer engineer, Varun Gupta later went on to do his MBA from Columbia University, New York. However, he has been involved in his family business, a water purifying business, for the last 10 years. In 2015, he branched out of his family business to start Clicktable; a mobile and website that allow diners to make hassle free real-time table reservations at their favorite restaurants. It also brings to diners the best offers, amazing deals and exciting events at the best restaurants in town. Apart from this, there is also a restaurant based app called the Empower App. The Empower application is targeted towards casual and fine dining restaurants and it takes care of various front desk tasks like reservations, waitlists, guest data, table management, and promotion of events & offers.

They were just not ready to make a paradigm shift from manually managing their reservations, waitlist, guest data, etc and move to a cloud-based product. Therefore, we quickly started providing unlimited free on-field training as part of our sign-up process. In fact, unlimited free training is a major USP for us now.”

Adapting to the circumstance

Although the consumers don’t pay anything to make reservations through Clicktable, Varun still had a lot of challenges to overcome while starting off. The biggest challenge for the entrepreneur was the difference between expectation and reality. Having done extensive research from over 250 restaurants, he believed that it was a well thought out product.  However, he was taken aback by the resistance shown by restaurants towards their product. He says, “They were just not ready to make a paradigm shift from manually managing their reservations, waitlist, guest data, etc and move to a cloud-based product. Therefore, we quickly started providing unlimited free on-field training as part of our sign-up process. In fact, unlimited free training is a major USP for us now.”

We have been successful in tapping standalone restaurants and now our focus has shifted on chains and 4/5 star hotels.”

Scratching the surface

After having started out of Delhi NCR, Clicktable now has roughly 850 restaurants in their platform. Varun says, “We have been successful in tapping standalone restaurants and now our focus has shifted on chains and 4/5 star hotels.” Varun has now started operations in Bangalore and Mumbai just a few months back and we know that the passionate entrepreneur has just begun to scratch the surface of the company’s true potential. They are planning to start operations in Pune and Hyderabad soon and target to associate with roughly 7000 restaurants across 10 major cities in India. He hopes to capture 5% of this market in the near term and we’re sure that his purpose will be served and he will receive a plateful of success.
