A graduate in Biotechnology from IIT Madras, Partha Sarathi was interested in acquiring a PhD. Therefore, most of his internships were research based. Inspired by his father, he also wanted to build a career in the medical profession, which is also the reason for him to take up biochemistry. It was only after his internship at Harvard that he realized that he was interested in building a business of his own that could vastly help the end user of her product. Following this epiphany, Partha went on to start his business venture, ‘Life in Control’; a platform containing programs that connect Doctors, Health Coaches, Dieticians and Activity Instructors with both the patient and the patient’s family on a single platform to allow better treatment of Diabetes.
A cost-effective innovation
Partha says that he was always interested in the health-tech space, and he also did a project in college where he made a diagnostic device for diabetes at a very low cost. He says, The conventional strip costs you around INR 10 or 20 each, which is costly. Pricking yourself 3 times a day depending upon how bad your situation is and spending INR 20 or 30 in one go is costly because you are doing it for years. That’s how I decided to make a paper- based device for 50 paisa.” He also eradicated the cost of the glucometer by creating an app called ‘Camera Based Algorithm’. Here, a patient is just required to take a picture of the strip and the app automatically gives you an approximate reading.
At that time, Amitabh had already launched his app and had a good team as well. So when we met, things just fell into place and I joined in on the journey that ‘Life in Control’ had begun, and it has been a great run so far.”
A powerful combination
It was at this point that Partha decided to dive into the start-up space. Before becoming a part of ‘Life In Control’, the entrepreneur had started another health based company called ‘Upsurge Life’. In the beginning, the company was facing some difficulties, which is also when he met Amitabh, one of the co-founders of ‘Life In Control’. Partha says, “At that time, Amitabh had already launched his app and had a good team as well. So when we met, things just fell into place and I joined in on the journey that ‘Life in Control’ had begun, and it has been a great run so far.” He says that the hardships were similar to what any other startup faces. Validating the market, achieving a good product and build a great team.
Have a lot of grit and be persistent with your efforts. Half-hearted attempts do not bear any fruit. The single most important objective should be learning each day. Be true to yourself.”
A global phenomenon
He now looks to make his company a global company and solve a global problem. He is an inspiration to many budding entrepreneurs and he says, “Have a lot of grit and be persistent with your efforts. Half-hearted attempts do not bear any fruit. The single most important objective should be learning each day. Be true to yourself.” Having fun at what you do is a key element to being successful, he says. It’s as simple as changing your mindset from wanting to be successful, to one that is more focused on growth and learning.
