How Two Failed Suicide Attempts Made Virali Modi A Successful Phenomenon

in Entertainment/Social by

Several years ago, Virali Modi was clinging on for her life in a ventilator following an accident. Lying helplessly in a coma, the odds were against her at that point but, sure enough, that she regained consciousness and had got her life back. However, she wasn’t mentally prepared for the fact that she wouldn’t be able to use her legs anymore. Depressed, not only because of the fact that she lost mobility in her legs, but also because her friends and family were absent, she attempted to commit suicide. Twice!  She says, “I tried to commit suicide because I couldn’t deal with the emotional and mental stress. After the two attempts, I asked myself, “I’m living even after two foolproof attempts, so why am I inflicting pain on myself? I’m alive for a reason. I need to find the answer.”” Subsequently, she got professional help, learned to love herself and started writing about her experiences on Quora.

I have received many messages saying that I’ve inspired them and that I changed their whole perspective. Those messages bring me immense joy and happiness.”

Recognition and passion

Immediately, Virali gained recognition from people. She says, “I have received many messages saying that I’ve inspired them and that I changed their whole perspective. Those messages bring me immense joy and happiness.” Simultaneously, she found her purpose and passion in life and credits it also to her parents’ support through her adversities. She believes wholeheartedly that she survived the suicide attempts to bring change in people’s lives.

According to The Budget, 500 railways stations will be made accessible, but what about the trains? It’s basically like showing a dehydrated man a glass of water but not giving him any to drink. It’s blasphemous. My campaign is all about providing accessibility in the trains. Why hasn’t it been done? That’s the question.”

Changing the landscape

On a large scale, she recently changed the landscape for the disabled by making railway stations more accessible for them. She says that she teamed up with a railway official to achieve this and doesn’t really consider it a success. She says that until other states implement the same system, she doesn’t consider her achievement to be successful. She says that more that 25 million people are disabled and they either have no rights and/or are not informed of them. However, she is tormented by the fact that only the railway stations will be made accessible for the disabled and not the trains themselves. Working hard to get the petition done, she says in dismay, “According to The Budget, 500 railways stations will be made accessible, but what about the trains? It’s basically like showing a dehydrated man a glass of water but not giving him any to drink. It’s blasphemous. My campaign is all about providing accessibility in the trains. Why hasn’t it been done? That’s the question.”

These are the things that I’m passionate about. I’m incredibly fortunate to have these opportunities and to make a living from my passions. I’m extremely grateful.”

Disabled Friendly

Apart from being an activist, Virali is also a model, actor, writer and a motivational speaker. She says, “These are the things that I’m passionate about. I’m incredibly fortunate to have these opportunities and to make a living from my passions. I’m extremely grateful.” However, she says that she would primarily focus her energy and spirit to work on accessibility for the disabled with the government. She believes the government lacks the drive to implement disabled friendly measures in the country. But, one thing’s for sure; Virali Modi certainly has the drive to do so. And, we’re banking on her to make the nation a disabled friendly one.
