Starting off on your own, ideating, executing…it’s not easy in any sense, but once you cross that road, you feel a sense of fulfillment, a sense of power”

The Bold Brains Behind the Business

Always determined to excel in the field of his choice, Hardhik completed his MBA in Finance at the prestigious Symbiosis Institute, Pune. He then went on to work as an investment banker for the likes of HSBC and KPMG. But of course, as with any corporate job, came the painfully long hours of working into the night, without any sense of fulfillment.

Although Hardhik gained enough and more experience in the corporate world, he was looking to find something that left a bigger impact on his immediate surroundings and build something that was of immense value. Not to mention, he was seeking the opportunity to be his own boss.

At a wedding, he reconnected with his old college buddy, Keshav Meda and the two started to exchange ideas on starting something of their own. Keshav came from an engineering background, completed his B. Tech at BMS Bangalore and moved on to work in the data analytics domain with companies like Mu Sigma and Citibank Global Analytics. However, Keshav’s discontent at work led to him quitting his well-paying job. He decided to take a break and went on a 40-day solo bike journey to the Himalayas, staying in ashrams and remote villages to cut off from the noise. He came back invigorated with clarity and purpose.

Working in the corporate sector for years, the two could easily relate to employees’ desires of being able to enjoy a delicious, fulfilling and quick lunch, before heading back to their cubicles and getting through the rest of the day. He and Keshav decided to partner up, and together, they made the daredevil decision to quit their cushy, secure corporate jobs and take a bold jump into the depths of the entrepreneurial world.

While the initial business model looked promising from the consumer side, the unit economics seemed to be failing month after month. But the two were quick to think on their feet and quickly altered their business model. The company refined itself to be an aggregator of various B2B food service providers including caterers, restaurants and food startups. Today, NextUp completely manages cafeterias for corporates on an end-to-end basis – right from conducting kitchen audits and food trials, negotiating and onboarding food vendors, to even rotating food vendors based on employee feedback. All in all, NextUp is the single point contact for any and all corporate food requirements.

With this new and improved business model in place, along with their never give up attitude, Hardhik and Keshav steered the company in a direction that made their economics thrive.

From a meagre start of a couple of employees, and a few thousand rupees in sales per month, they’ve now grown their team to 35+ hunger warriors, and are now clocking in a multi-crore turnover in just a span of two years. And all this without any external investment.

“Starting off on your own, ideating, executing…it’s not easy in any sense, but once you cross that road, you feel a sense of fulfillment, a sense of power”, says a bold and gritty Hardhik.

The two also express how grateful they were to have the never-ending support of their families who stood by them through and through. “Having their support and understanding so early into starting the business helped us never to give up hope”, they express gratefully.

What’s Up Next for NextUp?

Hardhik’s and Keshav’s voracious appetite for success don’t stop here. They are on the verge of expanding to other cities and collaborating with more F&B vendors and corporates across Bangalore. They seek to be the No. 1 corporate food management company in India.

Hardhik and Keshav leave us with a few simple and powerful words of advice that they hope will give other young and hungry entrepreneurs out there the courage to follow their daredevil dreams, just like they did.

“Never presume, ‘you can’t’, rather, ‘you can’. Never give up, follow your heart, overcome your fears and push yourself beyond the limits of what you think you are capable of doing. You’ll be surprised at what comes out of it.”
